Art as Circus

2011

Art as Circus is a series of paintings that employ a range of ways of making imagery all of which are relegated to a lower status than that of western oil painting. These include parts of signs, cross-stitch, painting on velvet, tourist paintings and imagery taken from children’s illustrated books. They feature subjects that include tight-rope walkers and tamed animals and obliquely refer to the kind of immaterial labour demanded by the role of the contemporary artist.
