Artefact and Ideology #2 (Malayalam script)

in Mythopoetic: women artists from Australia and India , (Marnie Dean, curator)
at the first Indian Biennale in Cochin, Kerala, and GUAM, Brisbane
, 2013

This installation featured hand-stitched felt shapes emblazoned with Malayalam script, the indigenous language of the Indian state of Kerala. The geometric shapes in the greys, browns, black and red typical of Russian Constructivism had small white heads reconfigured from free toys for children that are given out with McDonalds food packs. Scattered across the wall like Constructivist icons across a vast mural, the work addressed the impact of global marketing on local cultural identity.
