Pigface - the Forgotten Spaces of My memory

Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia, 1999

During a residency in Hanoi I was struck by the cultural collisions evident in the facial features of mannequins designed in Russia and made in Hanoi, and in tourist items designed to satisfy representations of ‘the exotic’. The TV monitor featured fingers typing out words from Claude Levi Strauss’ Tristes Tropiques(1955) (trans. into English 1961), and an accompanying written work documenting aspects of northern hemisphere anticipations of the kinds of peoples that would be discovered in the global south from the time of Pliny the Elder (23 – 79CE).
