Ideology and Artefact - the Faltering of Dreams
Museum of South Australia, Australia, 2002
For this series I selected a number of works produced by Russian Constructivists, printed them out via a number of faulty photocopiers in the Philippines, then scaled them up to mat-size. They were woven by a group of women in Samar, Philippines, who captured by hand all the technological glitches made by the photocopier. I installed them among the exhibits of cultural artefacts in the Pacific Room at the Museum of South Australia for an Adelaide Festival, and invited members of the local Filipino communities in Adelaide to work collaboratively on an accompanying exhibition featuring woven articles they’d brought from home to Australia, with accompanying stories about their relevance to their new lives in Australia.
